Asking-price multiple

On Ventmark, the multiple on a startup for sale is the asking price divided by 30-day collections × 12. It is shown only when the founder has shared verified collections. It is a rough guide to how the price compares with recent payments, not a valuation, not ARR and not profit.

Facts checked

How the multiple is calculated

Multiple = asking price ÷ (30-day collections × 12)

  • The asking price is set by the founder. Nobody checks it.
  • 30-day collections are the successful payments in the last 30 days from the founder's connected payment provider, including one-time purchases and the taxes customers paid. See MRR vs 30-day collections.
  • Collections in other currencies are converted to US dollars at dated reference rates, so the comparison is approximate.
  • Without current, shared collections there is no multiple. A self-reported number is never used.

Worked examples

In dollars. A founder asks $60,000. Verified collections over the last 30 days are $2,000. Annualised, that is $24,000. $60,000 ÷ $24,000 = 2.5x.

In rupees. A founder asks Rs 25,00,000. Verified collections over the last 30 days are Rs 1,25,000. Annualised, that is Rs 15,00,000. Rs 25,00,000 ÷ Rs 15,00,000 = about 1.7x.

The calculator does the same sum for any price and collections figure.

What the multiple doesn't tell you

  • Profit. Collections are money in, before hosting, salaries, payment fees and tax. Two startups with the same multiple can have very different margins.
  • Churn. A month of collections says nothing about how many customers will still be paying next quarter.
  • Concentration. If one customer pays most of the total, losing them changes everything.
  • Timing. An annual prepayment or a one-time fee in the window can make collections look high. A quiet month can make them look low.
  • Taxes. Collections include the taxes customers paid, which the business passes on and does not keep.
  • Scope. Verified figures cover only the products the founder selected in the connected account. The method is on the verification page.

What the wider market reports

Published benchmarks mostly use profit, not collections, so they are context, not a target:

  • Acquire.com's multiples report for January 2026 says: “In both 2024 and 2025, SaaS businesses sold at a median profit multiple of 3.9x.” That is for deals on its own marketplace.
  • Acquire.com's valuation guide gives “3x to 5x annual profit or 1x to 3x annual revenue” for many SaaS businesses, and adds: “It is presented as a qualified range, not a guarantee.”

A collections multiple of 2.5x and a profit multiple of 2.5x are different prices. If costs take half of revenue, a 2.5x collections multiple is roughly a 5x profit multiple.

Not a valuation

Ventmark is a directory, not a broker, escrow or adviser, and is not a party to any deal. Asking prices are set by founders; buyers do their own due diligence. The multiple is arithmetic on two numbers, one set by the founder and one from payment data. It is not an opinion on what a startup is worth.

Questions, answered

What is a good asking-price multiple?

There is no single right number. Acquire.com's own guide gives a range of around 3x to 5x annual profit or 1x to 3x annual revenue for many SaaS businesses, and calls it a qualified range, not a guarantee. Ventmark's multiple uses collections, not profit, so compare like with like.

Why does Ventmark use collections instead of MRR or profit?

Collections come straight from connected payment data, so they can be verified. Profit depends on costs that payment data can't see. The multiple is shown only when the founder has shared verified collections, and it is labelled as a rough guide.

Is the multiple a valuation?

No. It is the founder's asking price divided by annualised 30-day collections. Ventmark does not value startups, and the asking price is the founder's own.
