Payment gateway fee calculator for Indian founders

On a domestic card payment, Razorpay and Stripe India each publish 2% per sale, plus 18% GST on that fee. Dodo Payments publishes 4% + 15¢ for Indian payments, but as a merchant of record it also handles your customers’ tax. For international cards: Razorpay up to 3%, Stripe 3% (4.3% if charged in dollars) and Dodo 5.5% + 40¢. Enter your own price below.

What you'd receive

Per sale, cheapest first (fee plus GST, counting GST on Dodo's fee as if charged so an unknown never looks cheaper). Payout charges are listed separately below.

Stripe India: you receive about ₹980, 2% in fees. Razorpay: you receive about ₹976.40, 2.36% in fees. Dodo Payments: you receive about ₹946.80, 5.32% in fees before any GST on the fee.

Or: If the “+international payment fees” (1.5%) in Dodo's pricing table applies to Indian payments; its FAQ says India is 4% + 15¢: fee 5.5% + 15¢ (₹13.20), you'd receive ₹931.80 (6.82% in fees).

    • Dodo's pricing is unclear here: its FAQ says Indian payments are 4% + 15¢, but its table adds “+international payment fees”. Both are shown.
    • Dodo's pages don't say whether it charges Indian GST on its own fee, so it isn't taken off the payout. The “if charged” line shows 18%.
    • As merchant of record, Dodo also calculates, collects and remits the customer's sales tax, VAT or GST, which a gateway doesn't, so the totals are not like for like.

Per payout, not per sale

  • Dodo: payouts are free, but $5 if a payout is under $1,000; USD SWIFT payouts for businesses outside the US cost $25.
  • Razorpay: no setup, annual maintenance or refund-processing fee.
  • Stripe: a dispute you receive costs ₹1,000.

Where the providers' own pages disagree or are silent

Where a provider’s pages say different things, or say nothing, this page shows both readings instead of picking one.

  • Razorpay UPI. The pricing file and FAQ say a 2% platform fee applies to UPI; the site menu says UPI is free (0% MDR for most transactions). The calculator uses 2%.
  • Razorpay’s 90-day offer. A banner advertises 0% fees for the first 90 days on new accounts. It isn’t included.
  • Razorpay card currency conversion. The 0% FX markup is for international bank transfers; a markup on card currency conversion isn’t published.
  • Stripe UPI and netbanking. Neither is listed on Stripe India’s pricing page, and Stripe’s UPI docs don’t list India as a business location, so the calculator shows them as not available.
  • Stripe’s 2% conversion fee. Stripe adds 2% “if currency conversion is required” but doesn’t say exactly when that applies to an Indian account; the calculator shows the figure with and without it.
  • Dodo Payments in India. The pricing FAQ says “India domestic transactions are 4% + 15 cents”; the pricing table shows 4% + 15c with “+international payment fees” (1.5%) beneath it. Both are shown.
  • GST on Dodo’s fee. Dodo’s public pages don’t say whether it applies. The calculator leaves it out of Dodo’s payout and shows a separate “if charged” line at 18%.

A gateway and a merchant of record aren't the same

Razorpay and Stripe are payment gateways: they process the payment and you remain the seller, responsible for tax on your sales. Dodo Payments is a merchant of record: it sells to your customer in its own name and calculates, collects and remits sales tax, VAT or GST in the customer’s country. Its higher fee pays for that work, so the totals here are not like for like.

For an Indian founder selling software abroad, the GST question on your own side is separate: see the GST on SaaS exports checker.

How the calculator works

  • Fee = price × the published percentage, plus any fixed fee; Dodo Payments’ fixed fee is in US cents and is converted at the exchange rate you enter. Ventmark doesn’t fetch a live rate.
  • GST is 18% of the fee where the provider says it charges it. Stripe’s rule of no GST on the fee for a single card payment up to ₹2,000 is applied as Stripe states it.
  • Net payout = price − fee − GST on the fee. Payout charges (Dodo: $5 on a payout under $1,000, $25 for a USD SWIFT payout outside the US) are listed separately because they apply per payout, not per sale.
  • Customers in India are assumed to pay in rupees; customers abroad pay by card. Refunds, disputes, bank charges and your own tax on the sale are not included.
  • Enterprise or negotiated pricing (Razorpay offers custom pricing above ₹5 lakh a month) isn’t modelled.

Not financial or tax advice. Rates change; check the provider’s page before you decide.

Questions, answered

Does Razorpay charge on UPI?

Razorpay's pricing file (May 2026) says UPI has zero MDR but “2% platform fee applies”, and its pricing FAQ says a standard platform fee of 2% applies to standard UPI. Its site menu, however, calls UPI free (0% MDR for most transactions), and it advertises 0% fees for the first 90 days on new accounts. This calculator uses 2%; check what applies to your own account before you decide.

Can an Indian startup use Stripe?

Stripe says it is available by invite only in India, and that to accept international payments the account must belong to a registered Indian business, not an individual. Stripe India publishes 2% for domestic Visa and Mastercard, 3% for international Visa and Mastercard, 3.5% for international Amex and 4.3% for cards charged in US dollars or another currency, plus 2% where currency conversion is required. UPI isn't listed on its pricing page.

What is a merchant of record?

A merchant of record sells your product to the customer in its own name, so it handles the customer's sales tax, VAT or GST, refunds and chargebacks. Dodo Payments works this way; Razorpay and Stripe are payment gateways, which process the payment while you stay the seller. That is why a merchant of record usually charges more, and why its fee isn't directly comparable with a gateway's. Ventmark's guide to merchants of record explains the difference.

Is GST charged on payment gateway fees?

Razorpay's pricing and Stripe's support page both say 18% GST is charged on their fees (Stripe: IGST, or CGST and SGST at 9% each). Stripe says it doesn't charge GST on its processing fee for a single card payment up to ₹2,000. Dodo Payments' public pages don't say whether it charges Indian GST on its own fee to Indian merchants, so the calculator shows that as a separate line.

Is Ventmark paid to show these providers?

No. Ventmark bills its own paid plans through Dodo Payments; that has no bearing on this table. The calculator orders providers by your cost, cheapest first, and every rate links to the provider's own pricing page.
